PROTECTING YOUR I.D.

The FBI offers these tips for protecting yourself against identity theft:

  1. Order a copy of your credit report each year and review it for questionable entries.

  1. Shred or cut up all credit card receipts and old bank statements and bills before throwing them away.

  1. Close all unused credit card or bank accounts.

  1. Remove your name from mailing lists for pre-approved credit lines and telemarketers.

  1. Keep your PIN number hidden when you use an ATM or public telephone.

  1. Contact your creditor or service provider if you notice odd charges or if expected bills don’t arrive.

  1. Update your computer virus software, use a secure browser and install a firewall program.

  1. Never give out personal information by phone, e-mail or the internet unless you initiated contact.

  1. Don’t carry information like your social security number or any PIN numbers or passwords in your purse or wallet.
